Rosie Magazine : Planning an carrying out a magazine photoshoot

Preparation and Inspiration

For my magazine assignment i will need to carry out a photo shoot to fill pages and extra depth to the magazine. To gather some inspiration i have used a pinterest account( http://www.pinterest.com/sophiekipper/vintage-magazine-inspiration/).

To further gather my inspiration I created a short description of the connected colours that are not only going to inspire Rosie magazine but also can be tied to my photo shoot. A similar magazine similar ideas so I gathered knowledge from them in a short bubble map which I have developed into a blog post for evidence.

What colours have been used?
In this photo there are the creams and pastels such as the mint green and blue and well as the vintage textured cream and the pop of the red has many ties to the vintage era that i am hoping to copy as the red has many ties to the 50s.

What do these colours represent ( colour connotations )?
Cream - light, fluffy, old, festival , light
mint green - ice cream, sweets, guilty pleasure, old , pastels
black - power, heavy,structure
light blue - bright, summer, cool, relax

This gave me a basic layout of what I want to create.

Firstly i had to consider the things I will need this includes:

  • Photography equipment : camera, tripod and maybe some lighting.
  • A model : My model will be Eloise Braynt.
  • Location: I will split between two locations one and outdoors Forrest with a festival feel. The next an bus stop or main road this will give me the look go vintage fashion in the modern world.
  • Clothes: A blank 50's dress with red petticoat. For the outside shoot i will use a 30's log flowing dress with small antique ankle boots.
After taking all of these things into consideration i will have to think the logic behind how the photo shoot can take place. I will have to create a release form for the model and maybe the location so that all photos are permitted to be used. I will also need backups for all weather so coats and umbrellas for when the photos are not being taken. This may include creating a base that we can return to for all outfit and make up changes and maybe food if the shoot takes all day. For this planning I created a simple checklist of all the considerations for the day of the shoot it looked like this:
This sheet firstly outlines basic details such as the location and date but it also goes into the detail of the props needed and all thoughts on the shoot down to the make up the model will be wearing. This overall helped me to keep track on the day of the shoot.

Organisation

For organizational purposes throughout the planning and development of the shoot I kept a record of the planning shown through many tick lists in which I could track the elements I had finished and complete the ones I had not. A few examples of these can be shown here:
( These not only tracked the progress of the shoot but also other work to be carried out for an older blog being developed to keep track of photojournalism work that is still live at http://mmjphotographysophiewhite.blogspot.co.uk/p/copyright.html).

Copy right and Model release forms

Before I could carry out my photo shoot in a professional manor I had to gain more knowledge on the two important key legal factors that are copy right and the needed from here is a short post that I carried out showing this knowledge and also showing the completed steps to insure my photo shoot was carried out professionally.

What is copyright and who/what it protects,.
copyright is the protection of creative works and provides the creater ownership. Under the law the Copyright Act 1988 the work is protected from:

  •  Others trying to copy the work
  • Rent, lend or issues of the work to the public
  • To perform of show the peice on a public platform without crediting the creater.
  • Any adaptions to the work.
It protects many of the creative arts including ;
  1. Literary
  2. images
  3. logos
  4. dramatic
  5. artistic work
  6. music
  7. published editions
  8. film
  9. sound recordings
Justify why copyright is important.
Without the use of copyright artists wold struggle to make money from there work as others could simply claim it is there own and sell it on. This means the creaters would lose rights to the image and could not protect the use of it in advertising or public uses.

Explain what steps you could take to not break the law.
If you want an image that has no copyright you could use the search tools on Google images and select usage rights and then find an image which is labeled allowing you to use it for the situation you want this could be for commercial or not. If you have found your perfect image and it is copyrighted the first thing you could do is email or get in contact with the owner of the copyright and see if they are fine with you using it if they are not you could offer them free advertising or some may want money depending on the occasian this might change. Some may  just want to be credited when you do use the work. There is only one acception that allows you to use the work freely this is called fair use this allows you to use the peice for an example or to make critical comment. The best thing to do is to contact the owner.

Explain how you can protect your work.
To protect you own creative work you could do one of two things firstly you could imbed the copyright information this can be done on photo editing programmes such as Photoshop you simply have to open up the file information and imput the details including a copyright logo. The other way of imprinting copyright is placing a watermark over the image this is hard to remove and means that only you have the original image although there is faults because people do remove them but not very often.

Justify the use of model release forms
model release forms are used when models are needed for image that are going to be sold for adverts, marketing or any other other publications. They explain the agreement between you and your model and the photos that you are taking. They things that are normally included are :

  • The location
  • The date and time of the shoot
  • How the photos will be stored and used
  • Consent signatures from all those needed
  • They should explain how the model is protected
  • The names of participants including the company conducting the photo shoot
  • The addressses
  • Contact details
You may also need permission forms for things such as the location you are using and the clothes the model is wearing. You must also be careful of the use of photos of minors as this would need special permission from the perents.

For my photo shoot I created my own model release form that covers all that is need as explained above . Here it is :
During the photoshoot I managed to get my model to sign the form allowing me to use the images here is evidence :

The Photoshoot

After the weeks of preperation and planning the actually photoshoot went as smothly as possible. I completed the photos in which I needed. My shoot did have difficulties in which the manor that it was actually two on one day the first being revolved around the 1950's and having my model stand at various local locations such as the bus stop and some head shots, the second shoot being carries out in the local fields with an older 1930's styled dress that gave the festival feel that I liked. These shoots were carried out swiftly with no means for errors leaving me with a full list of photos to choose from.

After I had carried out my photoshoot I had to document the images taken this is traditionally done using contact sheets they allow the photographer to display the many shots taken these can be created using Adobe Bridge. Once I had created my contact sheet I could show the amount of images I have taken here is an example of my contact sheets:

From this array I chose my final photographs but did something others did not and that is edit them this was due to the fact that I liked the raw photos better then any of the changes that I was trying implement on them and thought the raw photos also had the look of photos from time gone by that my magazine was trying to represent. So here are

My Final Photos

This first image was created to accompany an idea featured heavily in the article about how people who dress in vintage clothing fit into our society whilst doing everyday jobs like this catching the bus in the rain. The photo has been taken to some extremes as obviously they would dress to suit the whether but I think what shes wearing pushes the point that I wishing to make. The photo itself has a dull colour scheme apart from the loud colours coming from the shoes and lipstick just to represent the difference between her and this society. The visual elements of this photo are set up using the lines such the top of the umbrella meeting the rule of thirds. The photo overall fits its given purpose.

This second photo was used to accompany the first it shares the same ideals and purpose and shot in the same location. The colour again is use to show the difference it shows how unique these people are compared to the dull background of everyday life and how these people are just trying to make it that tiny bit brighter. I chose to use the 1950's style not only because the magazine I was developing was a vintage magazine but because its what many called the ideal lifestyle where the world was brighter and people represented this through their style. These photos in this set occupied half of the magazine but were used specifically for features who were referencing how these people want to change the world. My only regret with this photo is cutting of the feet if I was to do this again I may have chose a wider shoot possibly showing the full bus stop and the full length of her in her clothes.

This shot has completely different ideals in then the first set as it was taken purely for the style elements. This photo became my magazines front cover. It has the simple style that can be connected to the 1930's style but also has a festival feel. This picture has used natural lighting which I think has given it the feel of a 1970's instant photo look and because this is natural it didnt need to be edited to make it look vintage. I think the main feature in this photo is the hair manages to be messy and windswept whist the main photo has not effect I think this draws you into her face and particularly her eyes creating a center focal point  for the image. This will draw people in and this is what the magazine would want from a photo like this.

This is the last of my chosen photos it is again one that I have taken as style filler for the magazine. I like this photo mainly because if the leading lines provided by this alleyway that lead directly to my model who I have placed to the side to just place her out of sync with the photo displaying this theme of difference carried out by the magazine. I think this photo portraits the model in way that's also spirit like just like the vintage style would be. The shadow also play a large part in the photo as the top meets directly below the models feet again using the factor of leading lines makes her the main focal point. This photo has been unedited although if i was to change it in any manor I would added definition to the shadows and possibly lighten the front of the image.

Overall I created the photos needed to not only finish my brief but also that carried the main themes of my magazine for this assignment.
