For the love of Brighton ......... : Creating a calendar

This was a short assignment carried out during my school media BTEC where I was set a short brief that detailed about creating a calendar for Brighton tourists. My first step was to research basic facts about Brighton helping me gather knowledge on what tourists visit most often. The facts that I found where displayed in a presentation in which I have misplaced but here are a few notes that I had taken :

  • Brighton a town along the South Coast of the Uk known as a top tourist destination.
  • Brighton has 2 main piers, the most interesting being the old pier that was burnt in a fire years ago but its skeleton is still standing.
  • Gay pride and many other social gatherings are held in Brighton as traditional every year.
  • The dukes of york located within Brighton is the oldest functioning cinema and has been running sice 1910.
  • Brighton is renounced for street performers as many busk at the seaside and throughout the town centre.
  • Their are many ties between the performing arts community and Brighton as the two work closely together.
From these ideas I planned my photo shoot I decided whilst down Brighton I would take photos that display the key ideas of social documentary or landscape I had planned this sue to the diversity of the people in Brighton but as well as the fact there are many iconic buildings and scenery that are recognizable in Brighton.

The next step was to complete the photography task by roming  the streets Brighton and hoping to capture the photos needed. I came back from my trip with approximately 200 picture in which I had to narrow down to 12 to so this I eliminated generic shots and unsuitable photos finishing with my final 12:
This first photo follows the key themes of social documentary. This simple photo of a girl not only captures the style of a Brighton shopper but shows the lifestyle they chose not only by shopping in these fantastic little independent shops that are run in the famous shopping area of the lanes in Brighton. This photo has been taken in action showing that this photo is a daily occurrence in Brighton showing you the story of Brighton shoppers.

This next photo was taken rather randomly at Brighton train station. I discovered that the station itself was great landscape as the architecture had great symmetry and pulled you into eras and times that you could picture as this is the first sight you see as you  step in to  Brighton and it would of been the same for your ancestors and will properly be the same for your descendant. I think this photo shows that the old can mix with the new.

This landscape photo was one of my favorites it shows the tidal pillars on the beach anouther main attraction for the tourists of Brigton . The photo display the pillars going one by one down the landscape I think the photo is mainly made by the way the pillars heights are contrasting as they are not only getting shorter the further away they are but also because they are short even if they are closer creating a thought provoking image.

This photo of a small American/Chinese candy shop located in the lanes I think depicts the workers and the diversity that Brigton has. The picture at first influences you to see the window but because of natural curiosity we follow the image by looking into the subject within creating a focal point.

This photo shows the everyday occurrences that happen at the station by capturing this you not only showing the tourist attractions and everything that is stereo typically connected to that location but showing how life really is in Brighton and how the people really are.

I have chosen this photo not only because of the multi multiculturalism that it displays about Brighton but also because of the fact that he was a character as street performer I think this is displayed in the image and allows you to see his story as this must be what he does everyday to entertain the visitors of the Royal Pravillion a large tourist attraction in Brighton and sometimes people can forget that these people where there cause they are over shadowed by the attraction itself.

This photo has created not only a leading line but also uses the Technic for tecture to display how the seaside feels with seashells cast in the stone you can almost feel the texture and the history that must lie beneath it.
To create this photo I simply used what I would call a 'lucky stone' this is a stone with a whole through it. I used this to create a blurred frame to the old pier that stands only as skeleton of its former self. I think by using the fresh stone it contrasts the old ruined pier and shows that old and new are happening the same place just like the fact that the old and new are happening in Brighton at the same as everywhere you turn there are memorials and snapshots of the past.

This again uses the history of Brighton, I found this old anchor washed up on the beach not knowing how old it was but I liked the texture of the rush and thought I could connect it to the pier. I think the texture seen in this photo just makes you want to be there to feel it attracting you to the history of Brighton.

Of course I couldn't do a calendar of Brighton and not include the see on the day that I went the sea was rough bringing up these powerful waves that were mostly white. I think this shows the true Brighton as it is the seaside.

To show the culture of Brighton I took this quick photo of the line up boats these where everywhere on the beach and seemed to be a fair representation of the seaside town.

To produce my final calendar I used the programme Microsoft publisher this was so I could plot which months would suit the given photograph's. I sorted the photograph and changed the layout of the calendar multiple times to achieve a final calendar that I liked. This final calendar has gone missing over the year so I am unable to post it.
